Here the difficulty genuinely changes. Fifth Grade Words opens the page as a gentle one, and what stands behind it is rated medium — the same tier an adult solver is handed — while the board stays at thirteen columns or fewer. The grid is no bigger than fourth grade's, and often smaller. What has been done inside it is not.

Words are hidden in every direction now, and that includes backwards. One may run right to left, or bottom to top, and on nearly all of these along a diagonal as well, so reading the rows the usual way will no longer turn up the whole list. Worth saying out loud before handing one over: a solver who does not know a word can be reversed will stare straight past it.

The method that works is to pick a rare letter — a J, a Q, a Z, a doubled letter — find it in the grid, then look outwards from it in all eight directions rather than sweeping row by row. Every puzzle keeps an answer key page for whatever refuses to appear, and the gentler grades are all still there if this turns out to have been a year early.
