Word searches for seniors: what they're good for, and how to pick the right ones
There are two questions hidden inside "are word searches good for seniors." One is about the brain. The other is about the puzzle in your hand — whether the print is big enough, whether the grid is the right size, whether the words mean anything to the person solving them. The second question gets almost no attention online and it's the one that decides whether the puzzle gets finished. We'll answer both, starting with the brain.
What the evidence supports — and what it doesn't
The "ten years younger" headline, examined
You have probably seen it: adults over 50 who do word puzzles have the brain function of someone ten years younger. That comes from a real and substantial piece of work. Brooker and colleagues (2019) studied 19,078 healthy adults aged 50 to 93 in the UK's PROTECT cohort and found that the more often people did word puzzles, the better they performed across all fourteen cognitive measures the study used — attention, processing speed, executive function, working memory, episodic memory.
Here is the part the headlines dropped. Everyone in that study was tested once. Nobody was observed getting better. When journalists asked independent researchers to comment, the response (2018) was consistent: Prof Oliver Braddick of Oxford noted there was no measure of whether any individual improved, only differences between groups measured on a single occasion. Prof Robert Howard of UCL pointed out you cannot rule out the obvious explanation — that more educated and intellectually able people are more likely to enjoy word puzzles. Dr James Pickett of the Alzheimer's Society added that the study didn't examine dementia risk at all.
So: word puzzles and sharp thinking keep company in later life. Which is cause and which is effect is genuinely unsettled.
What large studies of engaged living do show
The stronger evidence isn't about puzzles specifically — it's about staying mentally engaged over years. Verghese and colleagues (2003) followed 469 adults over 75 for a median of five years and found that reading, board games, playing an instrument and dancing were each associated with lower dementia risk, roughly 7% lower per additional activity-day per week. That is the real finding, and it's a good one: it is about a life, not an activity. A word search is one small deposit into that account — alongside reading, conversation, and, going by the 2024 Lancet Commission's list of modifiable dementia risk factors, treating hearing and vision loss and staying socially connected. Puzzles are not on that list of fourteen. Hearing loss and untreated vision loss are.
The claim we won't make
Word searches do not prevent dementia. No puzzle does. In 2014 around seventy cognitive scientists signed a joint statement saying the evidence does not support claims that brain games prevent cognitive slowing or brain disease, and a large 2016 review reached the same place. If a site tells you otherwise, check whether they've cited anything.
What we will say is that there's one randomised trial worth knowing about: Devanand and colleagues (2022) put 107 adults with mild cognitive impairment on either crossword puzzles or commercial brain-training software for 78 weeks, and the crossword group came out modestly ahead on cognitive scores and showed less brain shrinkage on MRI. It's a small trial, there was no do-nothing comparison group, and crosswords aren't word searches — but if the choice is between a subscription brain-training app and a puzzle book, the evidence such as it is favours the puzzle book.
The benefits nobody bothers to mention
Set the brain question down for a moment, because there are things a word search does that don't need a study.
It ends. Most of what fills a day doesn't finish. A word search does, visibly, with every word crossed off. For someone who has started to find themselves failing at things, an activity that can only be finished or set aside is a kindness.
It fits the body it's given. It needs one hand, no standing, and no fine dexterity beyond holding a pen — on a screen, not even that.
How to choose a word search that actually works
Start with print size, not difficulty
This is the mistake almost everyone makes. A puzzle that's too hard is a mild disappointment; a puzzle you can't read is an abandoned page and a small humiliation. Untreated vision loss is on the Lancet Commission's list of dementia risk factors precisely because it shuts people out of the activities that keep them engaged — so the large-print version isn't a concession, it's the thing that keeps the door open.
Look for letters around 14–16 point or larger, generous space between cells, and high contrast — proper black on proper white, not grey on cream. Grid size and word count
A 10×10 or 12×12 grid with 12 to 18 words is a comfortable fifteen minutes for most people. A 20×20 with 40 words is not four times harder — it's four times longer, which is a different and less pleasant thing. If someone tires easily, shrink the grid.
Direction set
This is the difficulty dial that matters most, and hardly anyone knows about it. Words hidden only left-to-right and top-to-bottom can be read normally as your eye passes over them. Add diagonals and it gets noticeably harder. Add backwards words and it gets harder again, because a reversed word can't be read at all — you have to spot it letter by letter. Topic matters more than you'd think
A grid of words that mean something — the make of car you learned to drive in, the flowers in a garden you kept, big band singers, county names — is a different experience from a grid of random nouns. The words become prompts, and the puzzle turns into a conversation. Browse the topic hubs and pick by biography, not by difficulty; for a gardener, plants and gardening is a good place to start. Better still, make one from a list of grandchildren's names, street names, or the towns of a holiday — it takes a minute, and it lands completely differently from something bought.
If you're choosing for someone with memory problems
Be careful with what you expect, and generous with what you make possible.
A word search is not a treatment. Nothing here should be read as a therapy for dementia, and decisions about care belong with the person's clinicians. What a puzzle can be is a pleasant, low-pressure occupation for someone who used to enjoy them — and the design goal changes completely. You are no longer trying to provide a challenge. You are trying to make failure structurally impossible.
That means: small grid, 8 to 12 words, forward directions only, very large print, and a topic drawn from long-term memory, which typically stays intact longest — childhood foods, hymn titles, film stars, the names of flowers. If a puzzle is producing frustration, it's the wrong puzzle, not the wrong person. Make it easier without announcing that you have.
Where to start
Print one large print puzzle and one easy one on a topic that means something, and see which gets finished. Then use the daily puzzle to make it a habit rather than an event — every study we've cited measured how often people did things, never how much they did in one sitting.
