Are word search puzzles good for your brain?

Somebody has almost certainly told you that puzzles keep your brain young. Somebody else has told you brain games are marketing. Both of those people have read a headline. Here is what is actually in the research, including the parts that don't flatter us — we make word searches for a living, and we would rather you trusted us than believed us.

The short answer

Word searches are a genuinely good workout for visual attention and for the part of you that recognises written words at a glance. There is decent evidence that people who do word puzzles regularly have sharper cognition than people who don't, and one real clinical trial in which puzzles outperformed commercial brain-training software. There is no good evidence that word searches — or any puzzle — prevent dementia, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Do them because they're satisfying. The rest is a bonus that may or may not arrive.

What a word search actually asks your brain to do

It is a visual search task

Stripped of the theme and the friendly grid, a word search is one of the oldest experiments in cognitive psychology: find the target among the distractors. Your eyes don't read the grid — they can't, it isn't language yet. They make rapid jumps, sampling a few letters at a time, while a mostly unconscious process decides which patch of letters deserves a closer look. Being good at word searches means being good at that filtering.

It holds a word's shape in mind while your eyes wander

Before you can find ELEPHANT you have to load ELEPHANT — its length, its letters, its silhouette — and keep it live while your gaze crosses four hundred cells that are all trying to look like it. That is a small, real load on working memory, and it's the reason a word search feels different from simply looking at a picture.

What the research actually shows

Puzzlers score better — but that's a snapshot, not a result

The study behind most of the headlines is a big one. Brooker and colleagues (2019) looked at 19,078 healthy adults aged 50 to 93 in the UK's PROTECT cohort and found that the more often people reported doing word puzzles, the better they scored — on all fourteen cognitive measures used, covering attention, processing speed, executive function, working memory and episodic memory. That's a large sample and a consistent pattern.

It is also a single photograph. Everyone was measured once. Nobody was watched improving. When the Science Media Centre (2018) asked independent researchers about it, they made the obvious point in unison: people who are already sharp, and already well educated, are more likely to enjoy word puzzles in the first place. Prof Oliver Braddick of Oxford put it plainly — there is no measure here of whether any individual improved. Dr James Pickett of the Alzheimer's Society added that the study didn't look at dementia risk at all. So the honest reading is: word puzzles and sharp cognition travel together in later life. Which one is driving is not established.

The one trial that put puzzles to the test

There is one study that gets around the snapshot problem, and it's worth knowing about. Devanand and colleagues (2022) randomly assigned 107 adults with mild cognitive impairment either to web-based crossword puzzles or to commercial computerised brain-training games, and followed them for 78 weeks. The crossword group finished slightly better than they started on a standard cognitive scale; the games group drifted slightly worse. MRI scans showed less shrinkage in the crossword group's brains.

Two things to hold onto. First, this is a real randomised trial with a real result, and the low-tech option won. Second, the authors themselves are careful: there was no untrained comparison group, so we can't say whether crosswords beat doing nothing at all; the participants were unusually well educated; the difference in how many people went on to develop dementia wasn't statistically significant; and they explicitly call for independent replication. Also, crosswords are not word searches. They're a harder, more language-heavy task. It would be dishonest of us to hand you their trophy.

Where the big claims fall apart

In 2014, around seventy cognitive psychologists and neuroscientists signed a joint statement organised by the Stanford Center on Longevity and the Max Planck Institute, saying that the literature does not support claims that brain games improve general cognitive performance in everyday life or prevent cognitive slowing and disease. Two years later Simons and colleagues (2016) published a book-length review in Psychological Science in the Public Interest and reached a compatible conclusion: practice reliably makes you better at the thing you practised, sometimes carries over to very similar tasks, and rarely shows up in everyday life.

That's the ceiling on what a word search can promise. Do a thousand of them and you will get conspicuously good at word searches. Whether that makes you better at finding your keys is not something anyone has demonstrated. And when the Lancet Commission (2024) published its list of fourteen things you can actually change to lower dementia risk, puzzles weren't on it — education, hearing loss, untreated vision loss, social isolation, blood pressure, physical inactivity and depression were.

So is it worth doing?

Yes — and you don't need it to be medicine. A word search is ten minutes of focused, finishable attention with a clear finish line, which is a rarer thing than it sounds. It asks nothing of your mood, requires no opponent, and cannot be lost. A neurologist quoted by Houston Methodist (2022) framed it about as well as anyone: the evidence isn't there, and it also isn't going to hurt you, and it beats the alternatives you'd otherwise be doing with those ten minutes. None of this is medical advice, and nothing here should change a conversation you would otherwise have with a doctor.

If you want to give the habit its best chance, our reading of the evidence points one way: variety and difficulty matter more than volume. A puzzle you finish on autopilot is a pleasant rest. A puzzle that makes you work is the one doing something.
