The Tempest is thought to be the last play Shakespeare wrote alone. Its protagonist Prospero shares this grid with Ariel, Caliban, Miranda, Ferdinand, and spirits like Ceres, Iris and Juno. Hidden in this puzzle are the names of characters used in the play.

- A lord of Naples, shipwrecked with the king's party on the island.
- ALONSO
- King of Naples, who helped depose Prospero and believes his son drowned.
- ANTONIO
- Prospero's brother, who stole his dukedom and plots another murder on the island.
- ARIEL
- The air spirit Prospero freed from a tree, who serves him in exchange for eventual liberty.
- BOATSWAIN
- The sailor who opens the play shouting at noblemen who are no use in a storm.
- CALIBAN
- Sycorax's son, the island's first inhabitant, enslaved by Prospero and bitter about it.
- CERES
- Goddess of harvest, summoned in the masque Prospero stages for the young couple.
- FERDINAND
- Alonso's son, who believes himself the only survivor and falls in love with Miranda.
- FRANCISCO
- A lord in the king's party who insists Ferdinand may have swum to shore.
- GONZALO
- The honest old counsellor who secretly supplied Prospero's boat with books and food.

- Goddess of the rainbow, who appears as a messenger in the wedding masque.

- Queen of the gods, who blesses the couple in the masque.

- Prospero's daughter, raised on the island and remembering no other human face.
