The Civil War in the United States was fought between northern and southern states in the period between 1861 and 1865. Of the 34 states in existence at the time, 11 southern states declared their intention to secede from the country in large part of the northern states intentions to end the practice of slavery. The war began at the battle of Fort Sumter just a month after President Lincoln was inaugurated as president.
