The Vietnam War first began in 1959. Vietnam had been divided between the communist regime in the north(under Ho Chi Minh) and the democratic government in the south(under Ngo Dinh Diem) backed by the American military. Led by Viet Cong units, Ho began a guerilla campaign in South Vietnam with the goal of uniting the country under a communist government. By 1975, the last American troops were pulled out of Vietnam resulting in the fall of Saigon forcing South Vietnam’s surrender and reuniting the country.
