Harlan Ellison's post-apocalyptic short story 'I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream' was published in 1967 and won the Hugo Award in 1968. In the future, the world is controlled by a small number of artificial intelligences evolved from the cold war conflict between the United States, the Soviet Union and China. In the course of the conflict, the computers take over the population leaving only a small number of humans alive that are imprisoned under horrific conditions. The story follows the struggle these few survivors face to retain their humanity and mental freedom.
