Harriet Tubman escaped slavery in Maryland, then went back again and again. As a conductor on the Underground Railroad she guided others north, and during the Civil War she served as a scout and a nurse and led the raid at Combahee Ferry. She later worked for women's suffrage from her home in Auburn, New York.
