A semicolon can join two clauses that would each stand alone as a sentence; a comma cannot, and that one rule accounts for a great deal of the red ink on a returned essay. These sixteen terms gather the marks, the sentence parts and the tense choices a writer weighs in every paragraph, from the subject and its predicate to the modifier that has drifted out of place.
