Frankfort is the capital city of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the seat of Franklin County. Frankfort is located astride a double curve in the Kentucky River in the central portion of the state and the Kentucky capital city is known for having one of the most beautiful capitol buildings in the country. Frankfort's population is slightly less than 30,000. Frankfort was founded in 1786 on the Kentucky River by General James Wilkinson. The name "Frankfort" probably comes from Stephen Frank, a settler who was killed at what came to be known as Frank's Ford. Frankfort is the home of Kentucky State University.
