Measurement, division, angles, and multiplication define fourth-grade math. Hunt for terms like perpendicular, parallelogram, right angle, and thousandths hidden in this grid, along with clockwise and counterclockwise. Decimals join division and multiplication in the mix, ready to solve on screen or print for practice.

Tips for Solving Word Search Puzzles
Words in this puzzle run in all eight directions: across, down and diagonally, and some of them read backwards. Knowing the rules narrows the search before you start.
How hints work
Press and hold a word in the list beside the puzzle above, or hold Space or Enter on it from the keyboard, and a ring fills while you wait. After five seconds every cell where that word's first letter appears is outlined in the grid. Keep holding another six seconds and the outlines narrow to only the places where its second letter follows on. Let go and the outlines clear. A word found with help keeps its outline, in the grid and in the list, so you can see afterwards which ones needed a hint. Hints are available while the clock is running, not while the puzzle is paused.
Ways to find a stubborn word
- Check the edges for long words. A long word needs a long straight run of cells, and the outer rows and columns are where those runs tend to begin or end. Trace the border first.
- Hunt the rare letter, not the first one. A word that contains a J, Q, X, Z, K, W or V is easier to find by that letter than by its opening one: there are far fewer of them on the grid, and each one you find is a candidate to read outward from in every allowed direction.
- Search the open ground. Once several words are marked, the remaining ones are hiding in the areas nothing crosses yet. Give the untouched patches your attention before re-reading rows you have already combed.
- Look for doubled letters and fixed pairs. LL, OO, EE, TH and QU stand out at a glance. Find the pair, then check whether the rest of the word runs from it.
- Scan one direction at a time. Run your eye along every row looking only for the word's first two letters, then down every column, then along the diagonals if the puzzle allows them. One direction per pass is faster than switching on every cell.
- Read the endings. If words here can run backwards, an ending like ING, TION or ER is as good a handle as the start: spot it, then read back the other way.
- Take the longest words first. They have the fewest possible positions, and marking them carves the grid into smaller regions for everything shorter.
- Pause when you are stuck. Pause stops the clock. A fresh look after a minute away finds what a tired one keeps missing, and Shuffle gives you a new arrangement of the same words if you would rather start over.
What the words in this puzzle mean
- ACUTE ANGLE
- An angle narrower than 90 degrees.
- AREA
- The amount of surface a flat shape covers, measured in square units.
- CAPACITY
- How much a container holds, measured in litres, cups or gallons.
- CENTIMETER
- A metric length equal to one hundredth of a metre, about the width of a fingernail.
- CLOCKWISE
- Turning in the same direction as a clock's hands.
- COUNTERCLOCKWISE
- Turning in the opposite direction to a clock's hands.
- DECIMAL
- A number written with a point separating whole units from parts, like 3.75.
- DISTANCE
- How far it is between two points.
- DIVIDEND
- The number being divided. In 20 ÷ 4, the dividend is 20.
- DIVISIBLE
- Able to be divided with nothing left over: 12 is divisible by 3.
- DIVISION
- Splitting a total into equal groups, the inverse of multiplication.
- DIVISOR
- The number you divide by. In 20 ÷ 4, the divisor is 4.
- FLUIDOUNCE
- Fluid ounce — a customary measure of volume; eight of them make a cup.
- GEOMETRY
- The branch of maths dealing with shapes, angles, lines and space.
- HUNDREDTHS
- The second place after the decimal point: 0.05 is five hundredths.
- KILOGRAM
- A thousand grams, the metric unit for everyday masses.
- KILOMETER
- A thousand metres, the metric unit for road distances.
- LENGTH
- How long something is, measured end to end.
- MILLIGRAM
- One thousandth of a gram, used for very small masses such as medicine doses.
- MULTIPLICAND
- The number being multiplied. In 6 × 4, the multiplicand is 6.
- MULTIPLICATION
- Repeated addition — combining equal groups to find a total.
- MULTIPLIER
- The number you multiply by. In 6 × 4, the multiplier is 4.
- OBTUSE ANGLE
- An angle wider than 90 degrees but less than 180.
- PARALLELOGRAM
- A four-sided shape whose opposite sides are parallel and equal in length.
- PERIMETER
- The distance all the way round the outside edge of a shape.
- PERPENDICULAR
- Meeting at a right angle, like the corner of a page.
- POLYGON
- A closed flat shape with straight sides — triangles and pentagons are polygons.
- PRODUCT
- The answer to a multiplication. In 6 × 4 = 24, the product is 24.
- QUOTIENT
- The answer to a division. In 20 ÷ 4 = 5, the quotient is 5.
- RIGHT ANGLE
- An angle of exactly 90 degrees, marked with a small square.
- ROUNDING
- Replacing a number with a nearby simpler one: 47 rounds to 50.
- TENTHS
- The first place after the decimal point: 0.3 is three tenths.
- THOUSANDTHS
- The third place after the decimal point: 0.007 is seven thousandths.
- VENN DIAGRAM
- Overlapping circles showing what two groups share and what belongs to only one.
Fourth Grade Math Vocabulary Word Search Answer Key
Checking a finished sheet, or stuck on the last word? The Fourth Grade Math Vocabulary Word Search Answer Key marks all 34 hidden words in the grid and lists the row, column and direction each one starts from. It prints on its own sheet, so you can hand out the puzzle and keep the answers.
