A cell copies every chromosome, splits each one into matching chromatids, and drags the copies to opposite poles along a spindle before the cytoplasm pinches in two. Mitosis repeats that copy for growth and repair; meiosis instead halves the set, leaving a haploid gamete with only one chromosome from each pair. The spindle is what fails when division goes wrong.
