Earth Day Word Searches
Earth Day falls on 22 April and usually lands mid-week, which is why a class needs something ready for it. Five of these nine are Earth Day puzzles proper — environment, habitat, compost, renewable, stewardship — and they range from a 10×10 holding eight words for the youngest group up to a 19×19 holding forty, which will occupy a whole morning.
The other four carry on past the day itself, because a single April date is not where the subject ends. Two of them sort waste: one lists what the recycling bin accepts, down to juice jugs and phone books, and its opposite number lists what it refuses, which is the harder lesson and the more useful one. A third takes recycling and conservation together, and the fourth goes out to sea for microplastic, overfishing and oil spills.
That spread is deliberate. A word search is a way of handling vocabulary, and words like deforestation, biodegradable and sustainability are long, awkward to spell and much easier to remember once you have traced them letter by letter with a finger or a pencil.
Everything here is free, prints on a single sheet carrying nothing but the puzzle, and can be copied as many times as a class or a clean-up crew needs. Every one has an answer key page as well, which is what you want when thirty sheets come back at once.
