Set in humankind's future, it chronicles the war between humanity and a race of insect-like aliens called the Formics. The fight for survival involves military recruitment of promising children, including the novel's protagonist Andrew "Ender" Wiggin. The novel's themes are controversial to some, and its use today as reading material for individuals studying military strategy has led to some criticism.
