H. P. Lovecraft wrote "The Call of Cthulhu" in 1926, but it was not published until 1928 when "Weird Tales" magazine included the short story in the February issue. The story was inspired by a dream Lovecraft experienced several years earlier, and featured the cuttlefish-inspired artifact that features prominently in the story and in Cthulhu imagery in popular culture. Lovecraft felt the story was "middling" but despite his poor opinion of his work, the story has gone on to inspire many reinterpretations and adaptations.
